As a painter of still life subjects, I’m drawn to the traditional, realistic style of the great artists from the past. I usually select common, ordinary objects which wear a bit of their history. My goal in each of my oil paintings is to capture the beauty of their age and wear. I am especially fascinated by the subtleties of surface color, texture, light and shadow, captured more mysteriously in such “worn” everyday objects.
Tarnished metals, crumpled bags, discolored crockery, rusty or jagged edges, antique teacups and natural vegetation are very appealing to me and often invite a more neutral palette. I particularly enjoy the challenge of discovering and revealing the nuances of all their shadowing areas.
My arrangements tend to be minimalist in nature, for I often prefer a less cluttered composition. I depend a great deal on instinct as I play with objects, striving to create a harmonious tableau, usually arranged at eye level.
